Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST)

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST) was developed in 1984 as a response to disproportionately high levels of unemployment among women and the difficulties experienced by women attempting to enter the workforce.

During the course of development, it became apparent that the most disadvantaged women, in terms of training and employment opportunities, were visible minorities. As a result of those findings, a plan was implemented to create a technical and life skills training program specific to the needs of visible minority women residing in Windsor-Essex. WEST, a non-profit corporation and registered charitable organization, is the realization of that initiative.

With funding from Human Resources Development Canada, WEST opened its doors in February 1987, offering unique training opportunities for women from Windsor-Essex and around the globe. Through skills enhancement and volunteer placements, visible minority women have been prepared for entry to employment and have moved closer to achieving the success they desire.

To me, WEST means opportunity through education, training, and support. It empowers women to pursue their dreams, build careers, and achieve financial stability. With a wide range of programs available, WEST opens doors to numerous possibilities for women to grow and succeed. We are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to break down gender barriers. Learn more about Stephanie’s experience at www.westofwindsor.com/stephanie-allen/.“My advice for women is to go for it! Don’t hold yourself back. Pursue your dreams, and don’t let setbacks stop you. It’s not always easy, but every bump in the road will make you stronger, and in the end, it will all be worth it.”The 'Faces of WEST' project is funded by the Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Initiatives Program: Community Capacity Building Component by Canadian Heritage. This initiative highlights the diverse voices and stories within our WEST community to celebrate our collective achievements and deepen our understanding of intersectionality and multiculturalism.
